Clayton was established on the road forged by Governor Tryon’s army during the fighting in 1770. The North Carolina Railroad had a depot here, and the area was known as Stallings’ Station. The town post office opened its doors as Gulley’s Store, until 1856 when Clayton was formally named. Today, we are the second largest town in Johnston County, located in the Piedmont Region of the state. After enjoying a cozy room and delicious breakfast in one of the area NCBBI inns, why not venture out on a day trip to nearby Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina. There’s always so much to learn here in the “Smithsonian of the South.” Another nice outing might be a visit to Ashley’s Art Gallery, or the Mineral Springs in the town of Fuquay-Varina. Any season of the year is a lovely time to visit Clayton, but some extra special times would include the Clayton Art Faire, with Millstock local crafts and music, held in June.
